The MATH
(Men of Asia Testing for HIV) Study is
a five year anonymous and confidential HIV Testing Study
in
six
Metropolitan
areas
of 2000 self-identified
Men who have Sex with Men (MSM)
The recent
availability of rapid HIV testing represents an important tool
n reaching populations with signifciant barriers to HIV testing.
The MATH Study will be the first large-scale HIV study that:

Asian & Pacific Islander Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) |

Examines
biological measures coupled with behavioral and cultural assessments |

Breaks down
data collected by HIV Ethinicty |
 |
Utilizes
a Behavioral Instrument available in Chinese, Vietnamese and
Japanese |

Recruitment
Criteria for Inclusion (Must meet
all):
- Male
- Equal
to or Over 18 Years of Age
- Self-identifed
Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Japanese, South Asian (Asian
Indian, Pakistani, Nepalese,
etc.), Other A&PI
- HIV status
known or unknown, Positve or Negative
- Has had sex
(including mutual masturbation, dry humping,
oral sex and anal sex) with another
male
- Willingness
to be tested for HIV by rapid HIV Testing
- Live in one
of the following areas and plan to be there for at least two
more weekes
- Must be
able to understand English, Chinese, Vietnamese or Japanese
- Must be able
to give informed consent
- Must not have
already
participated in MATH Study any point prior
Study
sites:
- The San Francisco
Bay Area (APIWC,AACI,AHS)
- Los Angeles,
CA (APAIT)
- Boston, MA
(MAP)
- New York,
New York (APICHA)
- Philadelphia,
PA (ASIAC)
Study Participants
will:
- Undergo Informed
Consent Process
- Agree to Anonymous
Oral Rapid HIV Testing & Counseling
- Complete a
self-administered computerized behavioral survey
- Be Referred
to Prevention, Support & Treatment Services as
appropriate
- Receive $25
cash Incentive
- Receive $20
for referring other A&PI men into
Study (up to $60)
Known HIV+ participants
will be asked to either:
1. Undergo both
rapid HIV testing PLUS confirmatory Testing or
2. Only Confirmatory Testing by blood draw
